The fifth generation of mobile phone technology — 5G — promises higher data rates and more reliable communication than previous generations, leading to a variety of novel applications. But to make this a reality, developments in a range of technologies will be required.
Fifth-generation telephony (5G) is, by design, inclusive of different technologies, allowing traditional mobile services, wireline connections and Wi-Fi access, and communications between cars, Internet of Things (IoT) devices and even satellite. The 5G network uses a wide array of enabling technologies, such as hybrid access, millimetre waves (mm-waves), mesh protocols at the edge and among base stations, caching and MIMO antenna transceivers.
